About Thalassemia:
Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder. Approximately 1.5% of global population carry a Thalassemia mutation. While the Thalassemia concentration varies geographically, the highest concentration is near South and Southeast Asia. It is estimated 3.5% of Indian population carry Thalassemia trait. Approximately 60,000 babies are born every year globally with this trait, out of which 7,000 babies are born within India alone. The life span of such Thalassemia babies is generally 2 years ( without any medical assistance).
